Dr Maureen Roberts offers (by appointment):

  • Private therapy (in person, by phone, or through online Skype consultation)
  • Intensive therapy (1-7 days, full-time)
  • Individual Therapist/Counsellor Training & Analysis
  • Home, Overseas & Interstate Visits
  • Support & Education for Families & Carers
  • Guardianship Board & ‘Mental Health’ Court Advocacy
  • Talks, Workshops, Retreats & Conference Facilitation

In place of a disempowering ‘mental illness’ model, Dr Roberts uses a more hopeful ‘crisis resolution’ perspective. Patients are treated with kindness, sensitivity and respect and as equals in a shared soul journey. The approach is empathic and wholistic, that is, physical and psychospiritual are equally valued and nurtured as two ‘mirroring’ halves of the whole person. Therapy is based on an understanding of the conflict (‘dis-ease’) and need for restored harmony between the opposite energies within both body and psyche.

Instead of viewing human distress as a sickness requiring ‘treatment’, Dr Roberts de-medicalizes normal life problems and views them instead as personal crises. She recognizes that suffering is unavoidable and that experiences of soul loss, depression, psychosis, stress, anxiety and suicidal urges are part of the vast spectrum of what it means to be alive and fully human. As well, acute crises can be ‘breakdowns’ which lead to transforming ‘breakthroughs’ - new creative potential and personal growth.

Therapy is, in this sense, not ‘cure’ or 'treatment', but rather an honouring of soul’s need for depth, wandering and pathology, a heart-centred dialogue in which the therapist is a guide. An initial consultation focuses on the unique personal story and on unearthing the original crisis and/or undiagnosed physical problem that may be contributing to the symptoms of the psyche’s ‘dis-ease’. The cause of the symptoms (e.g. depression, lost time, psychosis) needs to be gently brought to light by exploring each patient's life journey, which is the key to individual crisis resolution. (The word 'patient', incidentally, evokes 'time' and 'patience' - much needed ingredients for soul's journey).

Dr Roberts teaches self-help skills, supports and educates carers and uses a broad range of therapies, including Jungian dream analysis and art therapy, guided visualization, meditation, nutritional and homeopathic medicine, diet and lifestyle advice, psychoshamanic diagnosis and soul retrieval, synchronistic divination, ritual and drum healing.

Since there is growing public discontent with drug-based psychiatry - which is based on prescribing toxic drugs for invented ‘mental illnesses’ and hypothetical brain defects - there is a desperate need for a renewed, or ‘re-visioned’ understanding and practice of psychiatry as ‘soul medicine’. Maureen aims to contribute to this worldwide ‘practical vision for genuine mental health reform’, which she has named 'Temenos', a Greek word which refers to a universal instinct to create a protected, safe space in which to heal, reorganize and regenerate the fragmented personality. In a soul-centred context, for persons in crisis the temenos - which in dreams, art therapy, ritual and psychosis often takes on circular, or square forms - provides an enclosed, self-rebirthing place, akin to a garden, piece of sacred land, guarded castle, or maternal womb.

Maureen offers a range of services, including Guardianship Board and ‘mental health’ court representation (in person, or via phone, or video conferencing) for people subjected to psychiatric human rights abuse. She presents evidence of the harm being done to patients through forced drugging and, as a soul-centred psychiatric therapist, is able to offer a less restrictive, more wholesome, respectful and empowering alternative.
